Betty Louise (Calkins) Conway was born on March 11, 1936 to Arnold B. and Margie F. (Coleman) Calkins in Tryon, NE. She attended Oak Leaf Elementary School and Walthill High School in Nebraska before going on to work in the food industry as a cook, a waitress, in a packing house and at a donut shop in Arizona. In 1952 she married Richard Flaugh and from this union came five children: Donald, Richard, Jr., Bruce, Patty and Toni.

In 1975 she married Ferris Joseph, after his untimely passing she was united in marriage to William Charles Conway on December 15, 1978 in Mitchell, SD. They were together 33 years until his passing on January 8, 2012. Betty liked to try her luck gambling, enjoyed visiting with her friends in Kimball, being outdoors while camping and fishing and loved attending family gatherings. She moved to Vermillion, SD to live with her daughter, Patty in November of 2013. She became a resident of the Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point, SD in March of 2015 where she enjoyed playing bingo and Yahtzee and completing crossword and find-a-word puzzles.

Grateful for having shared in Betty’s life: her three children: Bruce Flaugh, Patty Nelson and Toni Flaugh; two step-daughters: Susan (Ron) Brueggeman and Pam Wagner; two brothers: Everett (Mary) Calkins and Ronald (Anita) Calkins; a sister-in-law, Sharon Calkins; along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren; step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for your loss. May you find comfort and hope in the Bible promise of a resurrection found in Acts 24:15 “And I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous” and Jesus’ words at John 5:28 “Do not be amazed this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out” How thankful we can be for the sure hope of seeing our dear loved ones again.
