Maxine Iris Hohbach, 89, of Plankinton, SD passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, December 31, 2020 after a recent cancer diagnosis. A Private Family-Only Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Plankinton. A Private Family-Only Committal Service will follow at Mizpah Cemetery, Plankinton. Visitation will be held at the church for Family-Only from 5:30 – 6:30 P.M. on Monday. Public Visitation will be from 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. Monday, January 4, 2021 with a 7:30 P.M. Public Prayer Service. The family requests all attendees to services wear a facemask and practice social distancing. A recording of the Service will available under "Photos & Videos".
Maxine Iris (Matteson) Hohbach was born on August 8, 1931 to Albert and Alice (Hildebrand) Matteson in Plankinton, SD. She was the oldest of three girls being joined in the family with Mavis and Norma, they resided on a farm near Plankinton.
Maxine attended Mullivan Grade School. She graduated from Plankinton High School and later from Dakota Wesleyan University obtaining an elementary education degree.
She was united in marriage to Carl G. Hohbach on September 2, 1951 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Plankinton. They resided on farms near Plankinton, Alexandria, and White Lake where they reared their children Sandra, Lynne, and Brad. They retired to Plankinton in 1991 where Carl passed away in 1993.
Later the family expanded with in-laws, Warren (Sandra) Sieg, Mark (Lynne) Davis, and Ellen (Brad) McAlexander. They welcomed eight grandchildren who were the joy of her life and seven great grandchildren who were a blessing in her “golden” years.
Maxine taught school for thirty-three years. She enjoyed each class and kept in contact with some students for many years.
She enjoyed farm life, baking (with pies being her specialty), gardening, sewing, hosting family get-togethers, and overnight visits from grandchildren. She was an avid reader, completed crossword puzzles daily, played cards with friends, and participated in church activities especially Dorcas Circle.
She is survived by her children Sandra (Warren) Sieg of Sioux Falls, SD; Lynne (Mark) Davis of Centerville, OH; and Brad (Ellen) Hohbach who reside on the family farm near White Lake, SD. Also, her grandchildren Travis, Kellen (Sarah), and Landon Sieg; Lauren Davis (Brad) Smalling, Drew (Brittany) Davis, and Seth and Elissa Hohbach; great grandchildren Aubryn and Maddox Sieg, Everly, Levi, and Valerie Smalling, Aleena Iris and Drake Davis. Plus two sisters, Mavis Fraser and Norma Moller; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl, grandson Grant Davis, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.
